Sony’s PlayStation sells 1 million units on launch day, but faces some problems
This article focuses entirely on the release day issues with the PS4. The Xbox One hadn't come out by the release of the article. The article tells of some specific incidents of people having huge issues with the console. These issues include problems with the HDMI port, being unable to turn the console on, games constantly stuck on loop, the console heating to incredibly high temperatures, and others. It points out that there are unfavorable online reviews of the console that take note of the problems with the console. Of course, it's not like the console release was a complete botch, as these were only a select few cases. Many people are currently enjoying a fully functional PS4 today, with only small glitches that are being worked out as we speak. Glitches in the system are a common thing of any console release since the 6th gen. Since these reports of these issues have got out, Sony has been working to come up with solutions for victims of faulty consoles.
Economically, this could mean a few things for the sales. Obviously someone seeing multiple negative reviews of a console online will be deterred from buying it. These problems may cost Sony more money as well. If these reports continue after a while, I wouldn't be surprised to see that they have more quality control checks for each console. Even with these reports though, I don't think it's nearly enough to halt sales of the console. I mean, it sold over a million copies on the release day alone. That is impressive in and of it itself, and while it is disappointing to see that there were defective consoles, overall the release was a huge success. As noted in the other article I posted, the release wasn't profitable however. Sony did this willingly however, looking for revenue from games and services. My only real concern is that they may have lost future customers who may be wary in buying another Sony product. I'm talking about those specifically who were victims of the faulty consoles.
I think that after Sony solves these minor problems, the PS4 will garner very positive reviews, but by then it could be too late. If the initial negative reaction turns away early adopters, then the are likely to buy an Xbox One instead, and will probably never buy a PS4, which is bad news for Sony indeed.
ReplyDeleteI agree with David. I think these are minor problems and with most electronics I feel it is hard not to have some minor bug problems. I think the PS4 will end up getting good reviews and especially since the holiday season is here with minor problems I can still see all those hopeful children putting it on their Wish List.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you both. I think people will buy PS4 but with a lower price though. Since the holiday season is here, Sony can keep PS4 at the original and put up some kind of sale.
ReplyDeleteI don't think these small defects are going to hurt Sony that much. I believe the reduction in sales is mainly due to the economic state currently. Obviously since most of the population must cut spending, hence the low economy, this will eliminate necessity spending such as buying the PS4.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like any other release of a new product. Almost all have some sort of issue so this is no surprise and should not hurt Sony.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Will. If you looked back at historical launches, nearly every console faced their share of launch issues. This should not be a major concern, especially since their main competitor, Xbox One, dealt with the same thing with their launch.
ReplyDeleteI know that it was said few consuls had the defect problems but that the same time that's one expensive toy to have not working. I think they should have spent some more time perfecting their product in stead of worrying about having the first launch date. I think after awhile the reviews won't affect the company, but right away probably did.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lem and Will that yes, if you look back most gaming consoles always have some sort of launch issues, but I think that is exactly Kirsten's point. All these game consoles have launch problems so why wouldn't these companies start to see this trend and work on have the problems solved before the launch date. Obviously nothing is perfect but I do think the companies could work harder to fix it before their launch date because like Kirsten said it is not cheap. But, I don't know these companies return policies and their warranty plans.
